CNN —Hundreds of armed Israeli settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank on Friday, setting fire to several homes and cars in one of the largest attacks by settlers this year, according to Palestinian officials. According to Abu-Alia, Israeli security forces had informed Palestinian officials that the settlers were looking for an Israeli teenager who had gone missing earlier in the day. Videos obtained by CNN show parts of the village burning, with smoke billowing over several buildings and settlers lobbing rocks. Israeli settlers wearing headscarves are seen near billowing smoke. We mustn’t sacrifice what makes New York unique and beautiful simply for new buildings and for uncreative solutions to pressing housing problems. We have lots of unused commercial and industrial buildings in the city that can be converted to housing.

The proliferation of state programs has been sparked by the temporary expansion of the federal child tax credit during the pandemic. The credit, created in the mid-1990s, reduces the amount that families with children owe in federal income taxes. The only two states that had created refundable child tax credits before the pandemic, New York and California, both significantly increased eligibility. The largest credit, which Minnesota created in May, offers up to $1,750 per child for households with incomes below $35,000 per year — roughly half the lapsed federal credit. But unlike the federal expansion, the state credits are meant to be permanent.
